A study was conducted to develop site index curves for even aged spruce fir stands in Maine. Stem analysis data for spruce (Picea rubens Sarg., Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P., Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), and balsam fir (Albies balsamea (L.) Mill.), which had been collected in western, northern, and eastern Maine for regional growth and yield studies, were used. Measurements on the 198 circular plots analyzed included total height, age at four-foot intervals from a stump height of 0.5 feet to the tip of the bole, and diameter at breast height of the overstory trees, and diameter at breast height of the understory trees.
