The use of composite estimators for estimating forest biomass and growth from permanent sample plots established by the angle count method

Problem Addressed: Using angle count sampling for permanent plots can create issues when computing growth

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Provide a new estimator for determining growth on remeasured plots using an angle gauge

Key Findings: The Bitterlich estimator is a special case of a composite estimate between the new variable basal area factor and its antithetic counterpart

Recommendation: Additivity and efficiency are possible when permanent sample plots are established with a point sampling design

Maximum and Largest Crown Width Equations for 15 Tree Species in Maine

Problem Addressed: Crown width is an important tree attribute, but challenging and expensive to measure.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Develop equations to predict maximum and largest crown width as a function of DBH

Key Findings: Large differences between species crown widths and a strong relationship with DBH

Recommendation: Crown width equations are useful tool and can be used to derive a variety of forest attributes like crown closure.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Provide relevant research for current issues facing family forests: forest pests, timber harvesting, recreation access, intergenerational transfer, etc.

Key Findings: CRSF is actively engaged in research and outreach that benefits Maine's non-industrial private landowners (also called family forest or small woodland owners). Mainers owning small parcels of land (10-1,000 acres) comprise 34% of the forests in Maine.
