The present study is part of a larger investigation in New Brunswick (Morris et al, 1955) to determine the effect of severe defoliation by the spruce budworm, choristoneura fumiferana (Clem), on Balsam fir, Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. During the development of an outbreak of this insect stands of balsam fir trees usually suffer defoliation severe enough to cause death of a large number of trees.
