This month, the University of Michigan's Research New's explores spruce budworm research. Along with describing the how and what of this work, the issue also describes a philosophical undercurrent. Science and society are beginning to think about bugs and trees in a new way. The researchers sum up their way of thinking: Integrated Pest Management. IPM represents a recognition that nature is complex, meaning that every insect problem has multiple implications and calls for multiple responses. Chemical insecticides have a place, but so does selective planting, or doing nothing at all.
