The report summarizes work done in Maine with molting disruptants (MDs) on the eastern spruce budworm during 1978. MDs have potential as effective yet ecologically sound chemicals for pest control; for this reason we are interested in them for the spruce budworm. Development of MDs for field use will require detailed knowledge of their biological activities. Several chemical companies are presently involved in synthesizing and testing MDs. It is hoped that tests such as ours will encourage companies to select the best possible MD compounds for development and make firm commitments to follow through on development of them.
