Spruce budworm impact was severe on the Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace Districts. Each district lost 69% of the spruce-fir basal area on spruce-fir stands by 1981. Dead spruce-fir basal area was estimated in 1981 as 293,441 and 412,288 sq ft on spruce-fir stands on the Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace Districts, respectively.
