A spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferrana (Clem)) outbreak began in western Quebec in 1967. The outbreak spread gradually eastward and in Lg7 2 it reached the Laurentian Reserve . Studies were undertaken in 1979 to determine future progress of damage to balsam fir (Abies balsamea (t.) Mrll ') and to white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in the Laurentian Reserve. Thirty-seven study plots here established throughout this region which covers about 1 300 000 ha (Figure 1). The methods used and the situation in 1979 was described by Blais (1980). Plot 12 was inadvertently cut Ín 1981 during salvage operations; the present analyses are based on the remaining 36 plots.
