Walking and hiking are two of the most popular outdoor recreational activities, enjoyed by a wide range of people. These activities are so popular because they require neither a substantial financial commitment, nor extensive training to reach a minimum skill level. However, the information available to walkers and hikers can vary widely across managing agencies and geographic regions. Further, there is no standardized system in use that addresses the critical issues walkers and hikers might be concerned with.
