Efficacy of two newer herbicides (imazapyr and metsulfuron) were evaluated with two widely used herbicides (glyphosphate and triclopyr) and a control for possible silvicultural use in Maine. Natural balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and red spruce (picea rubens Sarg.) growth was correlated against nearby vegetation to elucidate competition factors. Photosynthesis, transpiration, and growth of potted fir, grown without the confounding effects of competition were investigated to learn of possible negative effects of the herbicides.
