Growth in Bole Volume of Individual Red Spruce as Related to Tree Characteristics and Competition
- Solomon, Dale S.

One hundred and nine red spruce (Picea Rubra Sarg.) sample trees were selected from 8 even aged stands between 40 to 60 years old in northern Maine. Total height, dbh, crown length, crown diameter at the base and at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, of the crown length and distance between trees were taken for each sample tree and primary competitor. Primary competitors were trees whose crowns touched the crown of the sample tree and were used to categorize red spruce sample trees as growing in competition with (1) spruce only, (2) balsam (Albies balsamea (L.)), or (3) hardwoods only. The dbh, height, crown length and crown diameter were taken on by secondary competitors. A secondary competitor was a tree whose maximal crown would have intersected the projected maximal crown of the sample tree. The maximal crown of a tree was defined as the crown size of a tree that had grown without competition from other trees throughout it's life.
