A study was made to determine the effect of age, site index, and stand density on bole volume yield in cubic feet per acre and average tree size of even aged spruce fir stands in eastern Maine. Fifty-five circular sample plots, representing a wide range of age classes, site indices, and stand densities, were located in suitable natural; stands. Measurements on each sample plot included percent slop, aspect, elevation, drainage, indicator plant spectrum, abundance and frequency of regeneration, basal area point sample, mortality, and tree tally by species, crown position, number of cone, five-year height growth, diameter, age, and bark thickness at four-foot intervals along the bole, and age at the root collar and at breast height.
