The forests of Maine have long been its most valuable resource. They support the state's largest industry, pulp and paper manufacturing. Harvesting of the pulpwood product from these forests has typically been a labor intensive practice. However, due to changing social and economic conditions, advances in technology and greater pulpwood requirements, methods of harvesting have ended in more recent times toward a higher degree of mechanization. Because harvesting has become more capital intensive, increased emphasis has been paced on the overall efficiency of harvesting systems.
