The spruce budworm is a forest insect which undergoes periodic population level increases and causes widespread defoliation of host trees over large areas of eastern North America. This paper reviews the effects of spruce budworm caused defoliation on forest productivity, including radial and volume growth of both individual trees and stands, top-kill of trees, and rate of mortality in stands.
