The spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) has been periodically responsible for severe damage to fir (Abies balsamea) and spruce (Picea spp. ) stands in Maine. In 1955, an extensive moth flight from Canada started an infestation that be- came worse in 1956 and 1957, and treatment of the principal infested area was recommended. In June 1958, 302,000 acres in northern Maine (Fig. I) were sprayed with DDT at a rate of 1lb per acre. The project was planned and executed jointly by the State of Maine and U. S. Forest Services. Fishery investigations were planned to gather information on the extent and distribution of the effects of spraying on fish abundance, on trout food, and on trout growth
