Vegetation, being the energy source for all ecosystems, is the primary lever for manipulating them. The adage that one cannot manipulate part of an ecosystem without affecting all of it has considerable truth. There are only a few types of manipulation effects, in the broad sense, that are normally encountered silviculturally.
