Most (95%) of second instar spruce budworm larvae hibernated on the nodal and internodal branches and foliage of immature balsam fir trees, while only a very small portion (5%) on the main stem. The middle crown level was the most suitable universe for sampling hibernating larvae. At this level a consistently high proportion of the total population of larvae hibernated on the nodal branches and the estimate per branch had the lowest variability. Five trees from each of the two stands of immature balsam fir, with varying severity of budworm infestation in eastern Newfoundland, were sampled to determine intra-tree distribution and proportion of hibernating larvae on the main stem, internodal branches and nodal (whorl) branches.
