The genus Betula includes over 50 species of trees and shrubs found throughout the northern hemisphere. Three of these species, paper birch (a . papyrifera, Marsh . ), Yellow birch (a. alleghaniensis Brit. ), and gray birch (populifolia Marsh.) are common forest components in the north-eastern United States. High demand by the hardwood industry for the two most valuable of these species (paper and yellow) has caused a drastic reduction in their growing stock statewide. The 1972 forest inventory data for Maine suggest there will be significant regional shortages of these species in the near future (Ferguson and Kingsley, 1972).
