In natural and stands, variations in growth rates between plots before treatment due to variable stocking, variable population structure and site differences often preclude the assessment of growth response to fertilizer treatment by conventional plot. An alternative methodology is described, using growth for a black spruce standard against which growth following treatment is compared to each tree. The results of this comparison on treated and control plats are then related to each other to evaluate growth response to fertilizer treatment. Methods for extracting meaningful fertilizer response data are suggested for experiments which are in progress or are completed but not yet harvester.
