Both the landscape context and the local characteristics of a habitat patch are likely to be important determinants of the community within the patch. I explored these relationships by examining patterns of amphibian species occupancy of 116 ponds in an agricultural and forested mosaic in northeastern Maine. First, I tested for associations between occupancy by amphibians and forest extent and pond isolation; second, I developed and tested descriptive models of occupancy by each species using local and landscape characteristics.
