The problem of implementing a more refined spraying program for control of spruce budworm damage in Maine is discussed. Present spray operation procedures are reviewed and suggestions are made for dealing with the problems inherent in each stage. Improvements in spray block planning and guidance methods offer great potential for overall refinement. Suggestions for improvement are made in view of aircraft and personnel capabilities.
A Loran-C based electronic guidance system used in conjunction with visual guidance in well-planned blocks under the supervision of proficient, experienced guides and monitors is recommended for future spray operations with fixed wing aircraft.
