State listings of endangered, threatened, and special concern birds for New England and New York were reviewed and determined that 110 species were listed within this region. Species listed in all seven states were Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda), Eskimo Curlew (Numenius borealis), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), and Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum).
In analyzing these lists, two questions are addressed: (1) Are individual states focusing protection on peripheral species that are of imporance only on a state level; and (2) Are habitats required by these species similar?
