Cleaning is a cutting made in a young stand in order to free the best trees from undesirable competition.
We believe that cleaning is a responsible task. Although it is basically a simple operation, skills are necessary for its correct application. It is hard work and requires considerable attention and a desire to do the job well, therefore trainees should be chosen carefully.
Since the mid-1960's, the Department of Lands and Forests and Nova Scotia Pulp Limited have had cleaning programs, and the latter has been especially successful in training men on the job and in retaining a skilled work force.
