For the past half century the sporadic but common appearance of diseased eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.), characterized by discoloration, dieback and dwarfing of recently emerged needles, has been known as white pine needle blight. Not only has it's widespread occurrence and conspicuous appearance been the source of much concern at periodic intervals, but during the past ten years it has been sufficiently destructive to individual ornamental trees and forest plantations to warrant serious attention by both public and private research agencies.
