Growth efficiency (GE): stemwood volume increment per unit of foliage
Maximizing GE in uneven-aged stands:
-Requires maintaining a high proportion of the stand leaf area in the overstory where tree level GE is highest
- the future GE of the stand however is jeopardized if the understory is suppressed for extended periods of time.
Balancing the need for well-stocked upper strata with timely progression of trees through the understory requires quantifying the relationship between overstory density and understory height growth.
