Since 1946, field officers of the Forest Insect Laboratory, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, have carried out a study of the insect species associated with the death and deterioration of Balsam Fir killed by the recent spruce budworm outbreak west and south of Lake Nipigon, in the north western part of the Province. Detailed records of tree conditions have been maintained during each year of the study, both in special study plots and in permanent mortality plots established in 1943.
