Wood samples were collected from 27 nitrogen fertilized and 27 unfertilized eastern spruce from 12 sites in Maine. Fertilizers had been applied between 8 and 11 years prior to sampling. Wood samples were removed from all trees at breast height. On 9 of the sites, selected site properties were measured in the field, and representative samples if the upper 6 inches of mineral soil were taken for laboratory analysis. Strong, negative correlations were found between specific gravity and lignin content, and growth rate and specific gravity of the 3-year segments.
