Three methods of forest tree improvement and their applicability to northeastern spruce species were demonstrated. A black spruce (Picea mariana (Miller) B.S.P) provenance test was established to determine the best seed source for planting in Maine. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings were selected from nursery beds on the basis of superior height and a plantation was established to study the maintenance of juvenile superiority into the mature state.
