In the blueberry-sweetfern barrens of Maine, young red pine plantations are seriously damaged by the Saratoga spittlebug. The nymphal hosts of the spittlebug, particularly sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina (L.) Coult.), was effectively controlled by 2, 4-D applied with knapsack sprayers. The removal of alternate hosts significantly reduced the spittlebug population. No control was apparent during the year of herbicide treatment. However, there was a considerable reduction in nymphal numbers during the first growing season after treatment. Effective controL should continue for several years.
