Suitability and Yield of Red Maple Flooring

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the yield and performance of red maple strip flooring.
Increment cores were collected from red maple trees located in different parts of the State of Maine. Analyses of these cores indicated there is a rather wide range of specific gravity (.45-.57) found in the species. The site and tree characteristics of soil wetness, log grade, growth rate, and crown class could not reliably predict the density of an individual tree.
A yield study generated a regression equation that was able to account for 86% of the variability in flooring yield from red maple boards. Variables used to predict this flooring yield were: board grade, board width, and board surface area.
