Spruce Budworm Management Models
- Stedinger, Jerry Russell

Concurrent with the development of better budworm- forest models was an effort to use the models to aid budworm-forest management. Most of this work consists of straightforward simulation of a two-dimensional forest and evaluation of the results, One notable exception is the work of scientists at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, Austria.* They developed a dynamic programming algorithm which identifies the "optimal" policy for a simplified budworm-forest model. Their algorithm is presented, discussed and applied to a modification of the Maine model in Chapter 4. The chapter shows that simplifications required by the optimization algorithm cause the resultaut model not to reproduce actual budworm-forest behavior. A simplified single-site model which does reproduce budworm-forest behavior is then developed.
