Biological evaluation indicates that 3.5 million acres are in need of treatment in 1976 to avoid significant mortality and to maintain reasonable tree vigor. Generally, the area contained in this recommendation is the portion of the spruce-fir type in Maine found to contain hazard ratings of 19 to 25. Areas of significant size (500 acres plus) which have been shown to be dead or of such poor vigor as to render sprays ineffective, have been identified and omitted from the recommendation. Due to the mechanics of outlining an efficient spray area, the area includes some points over 25 and under 19.
