One of the greatest deterrents to the making of partial cuts in pulpwood stands of spruce and fir has been the fear of excessive loss from windfall in the residual stand. Lebarron (1948) has indicated that this danger has been exaggerated for black spruce on swampy sites. Recent dates from the Acadia Forest Experiment Station in south central New Brunswick tend to show that it has also been overestimated for some upland sites of spruce and fir.
