Soil chemical and physical attribute and stem analysis data were used to develop loblolly pine site index prediction equations for selected soil series on the lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina. Discriminant functions using measured environmental variables correctly classified only 41 and 28 percent of reserve test plots into 10-foot site classes (base age 50). Regressions developed from soil factors accounted for 26 to 99 percent of the variation in site index (base age 50).
