Although the sequence of physiological. changes which occur during dormancy are not clearly understood, recent data does describe the environments necessary to permit proper progression through dormancy from early bud set in summer until bud break the following spring. It cannot be emphasized too strongly that any major deviation from the endogenous Pattern of dormancy will result in a GREAT DIMINUATION OF SEEDLING VIG0R and a corresponding REDUCTION OF SURVIVAL POTENTIAL OF OUTPLAIITED SEEDLINGS. The following paragraphs describe the environnement necessary to permit normal development of dormancy in Douglas-fir.
