Foresters engaged in regeneration are faced with a large array of competing species and a confusing description of ecosystem resources and processes. To successfully regenerate a forest, decisions must be made about competing species and resource dynamics. This paper examines the seedling environment, the nature of competition, and the impacts of vegetation management on seedling survival and growth to assist forest managers in making such decisions.
