Foresters engaged in regeneration are faced with a large array of competing species and a confusing description of ecosystem resources and processes. To successfully regenerate the forest, decisions must be made about competing species and resource dynamics. As an aid to this decision making, this paper describes species and ecosystem dynamics, identifies critical points for management and gives an ample model for a vegetation management, response pathway. We begin with a description of the unmanipulated dynamics of vegetation recovery and then examine their dynamics in relation to goals in forest management.
