Forest vegetation management is undergoing rapid change in Canada and North America. Concerns about biological diversity, sustainability, landscape ecology, forest certification, integrated resource issues, and public participation are changing traditional assumptions and objectives for silviculture, especially vegetation management. The use of herbicides in the forest continues to be controversial, bringing intense public scrutiny of all forest vegetation management programs. Balancing public demands for wood fiber and other forest resources within this new framework is a major challenge.
