For three decades the principal industry of New Brunswick, one of Canada's eastern provinces, has been threatened by epidemic populations of the spruce budworm. Despite the intensifying research of recent decades, however, the biological mechanics governing infestations and the ecological interrelationships between the budworm and the forest remain imperfectly understood.
