Forested ecosystems of the upper Great Lakes represent an extremely important natural resource for the region and the nation. They are the headwaters of the largest freshwater lake system in the world and harbor some of the most productive forest lands in North America. The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of silvicultural practices on ecosystem dynamics and plant community production in a forested wetland in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Specific objectives of the study were to (1) evaluate timber harvesting and site preparation impacts on wetland water quality and hydrology, soil nutrients, and vegetation, and (2) assess wetland recovery following these forest management practices.
