In Maine, the bulk of the annual waterfowl harvest is made up of three species, the black duck, the green winged teal, and the common osprey. Of course, the black duck and the goldeneye breed commonly in Maine and are present throughout the hunting season. Although several workers have studied the black duck, few data are available concerning the goldeneye. Whether the latter can withstand present day harvest and continue to maintain satisfactory numbers is not known. Thus, intensive studies of the goldeneye are needed.
