This study was conducted as one phase of a comprehensive evaluation of northern white cedar undertaken by the staff of the University of Maine Forest Products Laboratory in 1976. In this particular investigation, seven mechanical properties of green wood, as well as rate of growth and green specific gravity were investigated. Forty northern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) trees were collected at random throughout the state of Maine. Samples of selected trees were taken in proportion to the reported volume of cedar growing stock in each county. Sixteen tree samples were taken from wet sites and 24 from drier, upland sites.
