Ever since 1905, when commercial production of softwood plywood began, domestic softwood plywood production facilities have been concentrated in the western states of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, and Montana. Their production has been distributed nationwide and over 50% was ship east of the Mississippi River. Among the factors which encouraged location in the Pacific Northwest were requirements for raw material. The wood has to have certain strength and size characteristics to be economically and technologically feasible for rotary peeling.
