Compared to agricultural and horticultural crops, relatively little is known of the distribution and circulation of organic matter and plant nutrients in forest communities. Such information is valuable in assessing the importance of site factors and forest management practices in controlling forest productivity. It can also be applied to such problems as forest site classification and evaluating the importance of associated vegetation in community dynamics.
