Banding and recovery data for 7,000 wood ducks (Aix sponsa {Linnaeus}) banded in Maine were analyzed to study fall migration and distribution of hunting kill, to estimate mortality rates, and to construct an experimental population model.
Maine wood ducks migrate along the Atlantic coastal plain and rarely cross the Appalachian Mountains. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida are the wintering states for about 80% of the birds banded in Maine. Very few banded wood ducks are recovered in Maine after October 20; it is believed most have left the State by that time. Autumn migration from Maine to Florida requires about 40 to 60 days.
