An investigation was undertaken to devise a scheme for the classification of intertidal habitats occurring in Maine. The requirements of the classification are as follows:

1. Ecological differences between the various habitats were to be reflected.

2. The terms of description were to be sufficiently clear and distinct so that the field biologists with limited experience in coastal habitats may use the scheme.
